This poster was created for greatest movie ever film - The Mummy (1999). The background and main title are handmade using sand and shadows, inspired by the film’s Egyptian setting, and the two-tone design represents the film’s theme good versus evil.
The background of the poster is a bandage pattern reminiscent of an Egyptian Mummy wrap. The pattern was made by gluing sand onto black card. After studying different bandage and sand dune patterns online several patterns and methods of gluing were tried and tested before deciding on the final design, one which had the most clear bandage appearance.
When the handmade background was being photographed it looked too clean and didn’t match the mood of the movie, so loose sand was brushed over the top of the glued sand to create a more natural and imperfect look.
The film title heading was made cutting the words out of card and shining a spotlight behind the cutout as it was hanging by fishing line to create a looming shadow which was photographed. The cutout had to be hung upside-down so that the shadow was darker at the top and faded down the bottom.
